She began acting at age seven in local theater productions, and played the title role in Annie (2012–14) and young Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience (2015) on Broadway. Sink made her television debut in a 2013 episode of The Americans and her film debut in the sports drama film Chuck (2016).
She had her breakthrough portraying Max Mayfield in the science fiction drama series Stranger Things (2017–present). In 2021, she played Ziggy Berman in the horror film trilogy Fear Street and the lead role in Taylor Swift's romantic drama All Too Well: The Short Film. She portrayed Ellie in Darren Aronofsky's psychological drama film The Whale (2022).

At SXSW in March 2015, Kutcher announced Sound Ventures, the successor to A-Grade Investments, managing a fund backed by institutional funding. Kutcher has also successfully invested in several high technology startups. Kutcher has investments in over 60 companies, the most prominent of which include Skype, Foursquare, Airbnb, Path and Fab.com. Kutcher has invested in five startups as of August 2017: Neighborly, Zenreach, ResearchGate, Kopari Beauty, and Lemonade.

She is best known for her role as Catherine Willows in the CBS police procedural drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000–13) and the subsequent TV movie Immortality (2015). She reprised the role in the sequel CSI: Vegas (2022–present). Helgenberger is also known for playing the role of K.C.
